I haven't finished the book yet. But I'm really enjoying it. I didn't know anything about it when it arrived. I thought it was just another cheesy game novelization like the Doom or Mass effect books but no... this is something else entirely. Non-spoiler premise: April was given a basic survival guide by her husband as a "joke". The printed pages of New York Collapse is the survival guide. As real world events begin to unfold it turns out April's pandemic survival guide is uncannily accurate. April begins to use the margins as her diary during her struggles to survive and make sense of her situation. The more she flips back and forth through the book reading and leaving notes the more she notices that this "theoretical" survival guide is more closely linked to the events around her than can be rationally explained. Each page is super detailed with notes and pictures from different days and weeks as she flipped back and forth through the survival guide over and over again.I decided early on to try and follow April's story chronologically. Or as close as I could, anyways. I wanted to discover the story as she did, one journal entry at a time. April's story is not written in sequence but it can be pieced together close enough by following which pen she was using during which time period. First I read the book as a survival guide, doing my best to ignore all of the scribbles and notes. That way I understand the book as it would appear when April first received it. Next I read through the book reading only April's first impressions - the black ink. This is April using the book as a literal survival guide as she wonders at the strange coincidence of the accuracy of her book to the world around her. Now, I'm reading the blue ink which is where she starts to see conspiracy instead of coincidence. Reading it this way really gives me a sense of her growing desperation, frustration, and paranoia. In short... it's flipping awesome. The great thing about this book is that there are so many different ways to enjoy it. Absorb it all at once, piece it apart as I have, or just flip through and enjoy each page separately. Best game tie in I've ever interacted with.
So far really cool. Just know that this book works as a companion to the Tom Clancy game The Division. Playing the game gives you more context into what is happening in the book and vice-versa. At its base the book serves as a survival guide for urban catastrophe, so there are tips on how purify water through distillation, what items to put in a "go" bag and other real life survival techniques. I don't really think that reading the book on its own without playing the game would be beneficial other than having a survival guide with a bunch of scribbles in the margins. However, there's the rub. Having a real life urban survival guide then to also have a compelling survival diary of a woman in post-virus New York makes it a really good read. I am afraid to finish the book, cause at this point I want to find April in the game. When you start to read you find out that the book was a gag gift from a woman's husband. The woman April Kelleher, now is using this gag gift to help her survive what the book describes as a TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) situation. Along with her day to day diary using the books described survival techniques, you solve embedded puzzles left by the author of the base book. Obviously, you will use this information to further your progress in the video game. If the survival guide and story wasn't enough, the book is made to look and feel weathered and worn. It also comes with seven physical add-ons (ie transit card that serves as a puzzle cipher) to improve immersion into the story and solve puzzles.Beyond an outside the box approach for game progression, its a nice peripheral the developers made for an owner of their game. If you have the game this is a must buy.
Where most (if not all) guides give you pictures of game related material printed on their pages this publisher actually takes the time to include them out on custom paper types and insert them into the guide for a tactile virus infected reference. Talk about immersion into a Genre! With digital downloads going the way of the Dinosaur, Gamer's are left wondering why thy are paying just as much if not more for PC download games... Is it the privilege of downloading?? If you miss having a physical piece of the game your playing to read and review offline, this defiantly will fill the void. I've never seen a publisher go through such detail in a guide and I really hope they continue along this path for future MMO's and expansions.
ok, i have to be completely honest with this one... it blew my mind when i unboxed it and removed the wrap, it smelled like a hospital! and OH MY GOD every part of the game, every part of the story, specially with the rogue agent and the cleaners piling up bodies in certain parts of manhattan came to my mind when i smelled it, i felt like i was reading a real doctors note with some soldier notes about what they saw, what they experienced, i mean, the makers of the game + the makers of the book completely nailed this one with me! it hooked me even more with the story!by the time the second game hits the market my mind is playing me games about what really happened and who spread the virus in the first place, i'm thinking that probably the government is selling smoke because they as we all do, are unaware of who may have spread it and with what end, probably global market crash to buy more stocks in short sales to earn more cash in a shorter amount of time? WHO KNOWS! and if this is true and using the world as their lab to test the viability of manipulating markets and viruses, who also knows where all this can end! rich people getting richer and also dead? or not dead but disabled? or some poor man who got played but someone who tried to make his/her way to the top of the food chain?... so many questions unanswered, so many thoughts without sense, so many lives lost *probably* in vain
